Are we stupid?

While driving to work this morning, I heard some shocking news on the radio. Klitschko beat Briggs in the fight for the world boxing champion. Well, that alone is not the shocking part. Briggs is now in the hospital with broken bones underneath the eyes, muscle and fiber rips and a bad general condition.

Having seen bits and pieces of the fight on Saturday night when zapping, I wonder why we have referees in such competitions. It was obvious that the guy was in no condition any more to fight, but no one stopped the madness that was going on.

So I got to thinking this morning after heaving heard about Briggs’ multiple injuries: Why would anyone choose to become a boxer or even only to do this as a sports activity? Is the world not brutal enough? Aren’t we busy enough with life that hits us in the face every day? We teach our kids that they are not allowed to hit other people or harm them in any way and then there are crazy people doing it in front of thousands of people in an arena and probably millions in front of the TVs all over the world.

So besides from asking myself who would be stupid enough to let himself get hurt on purpose, I am wondering how truncated the audience is that pays money to watch a fight like this and how bored the people in front of the TVs have to be to watch something like this.

I guess it is all about the money and as we see on TV every day, people do almost anything for some money and a few seconds of popularity.

By the way, the news about a likely sighting of Osama Bin Laden came after the news of Klitschko’s big success in bringing Briggs to the hospital. Crazy world!
